First Things First

Writer: Faith ChukwukaFaith Chukwuka

Get to know me.

Sometimes we have to take a mental health day. I did, I visited the lovely Hastings Boardwalk.

Hey, My name is Faith and 1ᴴᵁᴺᴰᴿᴱᴰbattles is my passion project. I am a 30 something Bachelor's student and a mom. I have been suffering from depression for over 15 years and it made me realize how much we take good mental health for granted.

Mental health isn't just important when it's bad, it's important all of the time.

I grew up in a society where good mental health is assumed to be automatic and you aren't taught that you have to take steps to ensure that you maintain your mental health.

The shocker!

At 17 years old my best friend died suddenly, then shortly after another friend as killed in an automobile accident. I had already been facing a lot of pressure from being a teenager and starting college and I didn't even realize when I became extremely sad (depressed).

My mom took me to the doctor, and I was sent to a psychiatrist who diagnosed my depression. I got meds and I got "better," and I never though of it again. Until in my mid twenties I suffered a number of traumas again and the "sadness" returned.

Again, being in university, dating, being busy, living life...I took the meds, and I got "better" and I forgot all about it, and this became the cycle.

Finally after the "sadness" had returned for the fifth time, I met a therapist who gave me the talk. She sat me down and explained that good mental health is something I will constantly have to work on. That I will have to be intentional in what I do every day to make sure I don't fall back into a deep depression.

Since then I have been actively trying to live in a way that will help me to maintain good mental health and part of that is practicing daily self care. I cook, bake, listen to music, visit the beach and watch sunsets, these all help me to cope with my depression and improve my mood.

Mental illness is taboo, it seems dirty and sufferers are often blamed, shamed and shunned because of it. Mental illness is never your fault, but good mental health is within your control. 1ᴴᵁᴺᴰᴿᴱᴰbattles will seek to encourage, motivate and inspire you all to practice good mental health habits and empathy for those suffering with mental illness.
